MedGlobal Warns Against Disastrous Medical Consequences of Total Aid Cut-off to Gaza

MedGlobal is deeply alarmed by Israeli authorities halting the entry of all aid, including medical supplies, into Gaza. Following months of war and destruction, Gaza’s healthcare system is already in a state of collapse. The civilian population is critically dependent on ongoing deliveries of humanitarian assistance to provide for basic nutritional needs and healthcare. With nearly all hospitals partially or fully non-operational, doctors and medical workers are struggling to treat patients amid acute shortages of antibiotics, anesthesia, trauma kits, and infant formula.

In recent weeks since the beginning of the current ceasefire and a notable uptick in aid deliveries, MedGlobal has observed an immediate positive impact on malnourished children, the wounded and the ability to treat many other medical conditions. The new cut off of aid threatens to drastically reverse these relative improvements.

“If they persist, these severe restrictions could cost the lives of thousands of patients in Gaza,” said Dr. Zaher Sahloul, president and co-founder of MedGlobal. “The deliberate obstruction of medical and humanitarian aid is a clear violation of international humanitarian law. Without immediate action to restore aid access, we will see more unnecessary suffering, more preventable deaths, and the further weakening of a healthcare system that is already on its knees.”

MedGlobal has worked in Gaza, partnering with local healthcare workers since 2018. Since the start of the war, they have been at the forefront of delivering lifesaving services, operating nutrition stabilization centers, supplying essential medical equipment, and training local healthcare workers while bringing numerous volunteer international healthcare workers into Gaza to support local teams.

This latest denial of essential supplies places thousands of critically ill and wounded patients at immediate risk, as barely functional hospitals run out of essential supplies, fuel, and food.

Dr. Sahloul emphasized: “This total aid cutoff will push Gaza’s healthcare system beyond the breaking point. Medical supply stocks will rapidly diminish if aid is not restored, while fuel shortages could bring critical humanitarian operations to a standstill.”

MedGlobal stands in unwavering solidarity with Gaza’s healthcare workers and patients and reaffirms its mission to facilitate the uninterrupted delivery of essential aid to crisis-affected populations. The organization calls on the Israeli government, global leaders, and humanitarian organizations to do everything possible to restore aid, uphold the humanitarian rights of civilians, and to affirm the principle of humanitarian law that all parties to conflict must allow and facilitate humanitarian aid. Falling to do so amounts to collective punishment at a time when civilians desperately need life-saving medicine.
