On Third of Anniversary Russian Invasion, MedGlobal Calls for Protection of Healthcare and Civilians in Ukraine

As Ukraine marks three years since the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion, MedGlobal, an international humanitarian medical organization, reaffirms its commitment to supporting Ukraine’s healthcare system and calls for an end to attacks on medical infrastructure and personnel.

Since the beginning of the war, MedGlobal has been working tirelessly on the ground in Ukraine, delivering essential medical supplies, training local healthcare workers, and providing emergency medical response to communities devastated by the conflict.

According to the World Health Organization, over the past three years, Russian forces have carried out more than 1,940 attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare system, killing at least 244 health workers and severely weakening the Ukrainian medical system’s ability to provide lifesaving care. Mental health in Ukraine is also under terrible strain, with many suffering from PTSD, anxiety and depression amid the ongoing conflict. Children are among those severely impacted – including over 20,000 Ukrainian children abducted from their families and communities by Russian forces.

“Three years into this war, Ukraine’s doctors, nurses, and first responders continue to provide critical care while being exposed to regularized attacks on healthcare by Russian forces,” said Joseph Belliveau, executive director of MedGlobal. “Targeting medical facilities and personnel is a violation of International Humanitarian Law, and yet attacks on civilians and healthcare facilities have occurred with alarming frequency and total impunity. These violations must end immediately.”

MedGlobal has worked closely with several Ukrainian hospitals, including Mechnikov Hospital in Dnipro and Okhmadyt Children’s Hospital in Kyiv, to provide specialized training for doctors treating war-related injuries. MedGlobal’s mobile clinic plays a vital role in providing essential medical services to war-affected communities in the Kharkiv region. In 2024, the mobile clinic teams provided over 3,500 medical consultations. The organization also continues to supply medications, surgical tools, and medical aid to hospitals and clinics that have been repeatedly targeted by Russian strikes.

“Ukrainian medical workers have acted heroically in the face of shocking attacks and immense strain,” said Oleksandra Kozlovska, MedGlobal’s Ukraine country director. “Three years since the start of the invasion, MedGlobal is proud to continue to provide support and training to help save lives and bolster resilience in the health system.”

On this somber anniversary, MedGlobal calls for an end to attacks on healthcare facilities and urges the international community to take stronger measures to hold perpetrators accountable for violations of international law.
