Attack on Maternity Hospital in Odessa Risks Civilian Lives
MedGlobal condemns today’s drone bombing by Russian forces on a maternity hospital in the Ukrainian city of Odessa – yet another unconscionable attack on a health facility, a protected space under International Humanitarian Law. According to the World Health Organization, Russia has carried out more than 2,200 attacks on health care since the start of the full-scale war three years ago.
MedGlobal has provided medical humanitarian healthcare in Ukraine since March 2022, and partners with hospitals across Ukraine to bolster the capacity of the strained and all too frequently attacked healthcare system. Just last month, MedGlobal conducted two trainings by American doctors who helped build local medics’ skills in trauma surgery and chemical weapons attacks.
Anastasia Moran, MedGlobal’s Director of Advocacy, released the following statement on the attack:
“Time and time again, we have seen Russia target healthcare centers. Attacking a maternity hospital endangers the most vulnerable—pregnant women and newborns—and can have a devastating ripple effect, deterring patients from seeking lifesaving care out of fear that hospitals are targets. Such attacks are a violation of International Humanitarian Law, and yet they have occurred with alarming frequency and total impunity. These violations must end immediately.”
MedGlobal has sent multiple medical missions into Ukraine since the Russian invasion in 2022. Moran and MedGlobal representatives based in Ukraine are available for interviews about the hospital attack and the broader crisis facing the Ukrainian medical system.
