Homs Healthcare Recovery Initiative

Delivering Lifesaving Care to Homs

Homs Healthcare Recovery

Launched in January 2025, the Homs Healthcare Recovery Initiative is the flagship program of MedGlobal’s Syria Health Recovery Initiative. Built in partnership with local health leaders, it is restoring essential services, rebuilding facilities, and strengthening healthcare systems in one of Syria’s most affected regions. This locally led model is designed for sustainability and scalability across the country.

Why Homs

Homs has endured some of the heaviest damage to its health infrastructure during the conflict. It is also a major return hub for displaced families, making it a strategic location to pilot recovery approaches that can be adapted nationwide. By combining local ownership with global expertise, MedGlobal is building a healthcare system that meets both urgent needs and long-term development goals.

Our Approach

  • Local Leadership: 100% of initiative staff are Homs natives, guided by a local advisory board, hospital directors, and community representatives.
  • Diaspora Integration: Over 600 diaspora professionals linked to local teams for training, mentorship, and specialty support.
  • Specialty Expansion: Upgrading hospitals, rural clinics, and centers of excellence in cardiology, stroke care, surgery, ophthalmology, mental health, and chronic disease management.
  • Community Access: Expanding rural health centers, deploying mobile outreach teams, and building community health worker networks.

Impact to Date

  • Cardiology: First 24/7 catheterization service in Homs, with 1,200+ stents/catheters donated, 85 life-saving procedures fully subsidized, and daily training for 23 residents.
  • Stroke Care: First stroke unit in the governorate, reducing mortality by 40% in the first quarter.
  • Surgery: 47 laparoscopic procedures performed; neurosurgical ICU established with advanced equipment.
  • Ophthalmology: 120+ cataract surgeries completed; new retina diagnostics installed.
  • Mental Health: Syria’s first torture-survivor rehabilitation clinic opened; 168 survivors served through 570+ therapy sessions, with 72.5% PTSD reduction and 86.6% depression improvement.
  • Primary Care: 4 rural clinics upgraded in Qusayr and Hosn, improving access for underserved communities.
