In Memory of Dr. Mustafa Elmasri

We are heartbroken by the sudden loss of our dear colleague, Dr. Mustafa Elmasri, a leading mental health professional in Gaza.

He was more than a valued member of MedGlobal—he was a compassionate healer, a dedicated mentor, and a friend to many. His kindness and unwavering commitment to helping others left a lasting impact on all of us, and the countless lives he touched.

As a psychiatrist and mental health programs advisor, he dedicated his life to bearing witness to the deep pain and suffering of war victims, those deprived of their liberty, grieving families, and frontline healthcare workers. Every day, he made it his priority to provide them with solace, counselling, and treatment, offering hope and support in their darkest moments. He remained in Gaza throughout the war, standing by his people in their time of greatest need.

His passing, far from his beloved home, is a profound loss to all who knew him—but the impact he made will never fade. He gave everything to the people around him, and we will always remember him for the kindness and generosity he showed every single day.

“Dr. Mustafa was one of the greatest and kindest people I have ever met. I was his student more than thirty years ago, but he wasn’t just a professor, he was like a father and a friend. Even after I left Gaza, he continued to be a source of support, always checking in and making sure I was okay. He went out of his way to help people in ways that were not expected of him, simply because he cared. He dedicated himself to supporting mental health workers, helping them find opportunities, guiding them, and ensuring they could continue their work on the ground.

“His compassion knew no limits. He personally helped coordinate distributions and ran mental health sessions for women to make sure they were not left behind. But he also carried some of the heaviest burdens, including supporting survivors of unimaginable trauma. He felt the weight of the suffering around him, and I truly believe that burden took a toll on him. His heart carried more than it could bear.”  — Rajaa Musleh, Gaza Country Director

“Dr Mustafa was a friend. He represented all that was good and honorable in our profession. He was wise but humble. He led from the front, and by example. Most importantly to me, he was a gentle and loving man. A patriot who understood that his patience was resistance. May he rest in gentle peace.” — Dr John Kahler, Co-Founder

Dr. Mustafa gave everything he had to others, never turning away from those in need. His kindness and generosity will be remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our hearts go out to his family, friends, and everyone who mourns his loss. May he rest in peace, and may we honor his memory by continuing the work he devoted his life to.
