MedGlobal Condemns Deadly Attack on Humanitarian Aid Convoy in North Darfur

MedGlobal strongly condemns the attack on a UNICEF/UN World Food Programme (WFP) convoy in North Darfur, Sudan, which killed five humanitarian workers and injured several more. As an organization that is providing extensive medical and humanitarian aid in multiple regions in Sudan, we are deeply alarmed and saddened.

We stand in solidarity with our partner UN organizations and extend our deepest condolences to the families and colleagues of those killed. “Humanitarians must never have to risk their lives to help others in need,” said Joseph Belliveau, MedGlobal’s Executive Director. “These aid workers were doing their jobs, delivering lifesaving assistance; this attack represents an attack on humanitarian workers everywhere.”

The convoy was meant to be the first in over a year to deliver aid to El Fasher. With thousands of people in El Fasher facing siege conditions, deprived of food and medicine and exposed to violence, deliveries like these are desperately needed to save lives and avert further disaster.

Targeting humanitarians constitutes a grave violation of International Humanitarian Law and threatens the ability of aid workers in Sudan – among the world’s worst humanitarian crises – to reach those most in need.

The protection of humanitarian personnel must be upheld, and those responsible for attacks like these held accountable. Humanitarians are not combatants and they are not a target.
