MedGlobal Condemns Missile Strike on Major Gaza Hospital

MedGlobal strongly condemns yet another missile strike on a hospital in Gaza.

The airstrikes on Al-Ahli Arab Baptist Hospital came minutes after hospital patients and staff were warned to evacuate the building. The extent of the damage is not yet fully known, but missiles destroyed parts of the emergency department, reception, surgical and intensive care units, also damaging the oxygen generation station, a critical lifeline for patients in intensive care.

The hospital, supplied by MedGlobal with a major shipment of medications just two weeks ago, is now out of service. If this facility is forced to shut down completely it will be a further devastating blow to Gaza’s already shattered health system. Either way, it represents another attack in a brutal pattern of targeting healthcare facilities and personnel in Gaza. As of January 2025, the World Health Organization has verified 654 attacks on healthcare in Gaza since October 2023, a pattern that cannot be characterized as accidental.

Hospitals are protected under International Humanitarian Law. “Attacks on health facilities are not only deadly in the first instance; they deny thousands of people access to life-saving medical care,” said Joseph Belliveau, Executive Director of MedGlobal. “It is a legal and moral obligation of all parties to conflict to protect healthcare facilities, patients, and medical staff.”

MedGlobal currently supports 12 health facilities in Gaza, providing nutritional and primary healthcare, mental health support, surgery, ICU and maternal/child hospital care, serving approximately 4000 patients daily. MedGlobal urgently calls for the protection of these and all healthcare sites and workers in Gaza. Medics must be allowed to safely provide healthcare, and people must be able to safely receive it.
