Flash floods hit Bangladesh in May 2022 and stayed until June 2022. They were caused by heavy seasonal rains that triggered flash floods in several areas. The floods affected over 7.2 million people in 9 districts, including Sylhet and Sunamgonj, causing widespread damage and disruption. The rainfall and flooding continued throughout the summer, exacerbating the situation.

The situation was further complicated by the COVID-19 pandemic, which made it difficult for aid organizations to reach those in need. 

The worst scenario was during the flash flood in Sylhet; the sudden and intense rainfall caused severe flash flooding, leading to the loss of homes, crops, and infrastructure. Many people were displaced, and several lives were lost. The floodwaters also caused severe damage to roads, bridges, and communication networks, making it difficult for rescue teams to reach affected areas.

In addition, the flooding resulted in widespread water-borne diseases, adding to the misery of the affected population. The flash floods had a devastating impact on communities, especially those living in low-lying areas and slums. Children and women were among the most affected, with many losing their homes and schools, and facing a high risk of disease and malnutrition. Its impact was felt for several months after the event.

Humanitarian organizations and the government of Bangladesh have been working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected by flash floods. However, the need for assistance remains immense, and more support is needed to help families recover and rebuild their lives.

In the aftermath of the flash floods, access to adequate healthcare and food supplies was a major challenge for the affected communities. MedGlobal stepped in to address these issues by providing essential medical services and food packages to the affected population. Special thanks is due to LDS (Latter Day Saints) for responding to MedGlobal’s appeals. With financial support from the LDS, MedGlobal provides food and medical care, and gives hope to those who have lost everything.

MedGlobal’s healthcare interventions included setting up mobile clinics and providing access to trained healthcare professionals who were able to diagnose and treat a variety of health issues. In addition to this, the organization also distributed essential medicines and medical supplies to ensure that the affected communities received the care they needed.

The food packages provided by MedGlobal were designed to meet the nutritional needs of the affected communities and included items such as rice, lentils, and oil. The organization worked closely with local authorities and community leaders to ensure that the food packages reached those who were in most need.

MedGlobal Provided Medical services and education Sessions to  26,110 beneficiaries through 2 MMT teams and distributed Food packages and WASH kits through community health workers and project teams.   

A total of 5,844 beneficiaries were provided regular treatments and distributed essential life-saving drugs, oral rehydration solutions and zinc tablets to families at risk of acute watery diarrhea by two Mobile Medical Teams (MMT).

Conducted an education session on hygiene and prevention of Communicable diseases in natural disasters with 5,844 beneficiaries through community health workers. 7,211 food packages and WASH kits provided to flood-affected households in worst-affected areas of Sunamganj district. A total of 26,110 people directly and 161,796 people indirectly benefited from the Sunamganj district in Sylhet division. Amongst the direct beneficiaries, 56% (14,706 beneficiaries) were male and 44% (11,404 beneficiaries) were female.

Among the direct beneficiaries 82 ANC and PNC patients, 5 emergency patients, 129 NCD patients and 5,628 OPD patients.

The impact of MedGlobal’s interventions was felt immediately, with many people reporting improved health and well-being as a result of the medical care and food support they received.

In conclusion, MedGlobal’s efforts in Sunamganj have made a positive impact on the lives of those affected by the flash floods. The organization’s commitment to providing essential healthcare and food support to underserved communities continues to make a significant difference in the world.
