MedGlobal Hopeful Following Gaza Ceasefire, Calls for Safe Release of Medical Personnel and Immediate Scale-up of Healthcare
MedGlobal, one of the leading humanitarian organizations providing medical care in Gaza, today welcomed the ceasefire agreement reached between Israel and Hamas. The agreement in its initial phase is reportedly set to allow for the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, to ensure the resumption of steady aid deliveries into Gaza, and to allow for displaced Palestinian civilians to return to Northern Gaza.
MedGlobal has worked in Gaza partnering with local healthcare workers since 2018. Since the start of the war, they have been at the forefront of delivering lifesaving services, supplying essential medical equipment, and training local healthcare workers, while bringing numerous volunteer international healthcare workers into Gaza to support local teams. MedGlobal personnel and volunteers have played a major role in speaking out about the terrible conditions and violations of international law experienced by civilians throughout the conflict.
Dr. Zaher Sahloul, president and co-founder of MedGlobal, released the following statement:
“Even for veteran humanitarians with experience in conflict zones, the level of death and devastation witnessed in Gaza over the past fifteen months, including the targeting and destruction of nearly its entire healthcare system, has been truly shocking and unparalleled. Healthcare workers and the civilian population desperately need this ceasefire, the resumption of substantial aid deliveries and a lasting end to this conflict, so that they can have hope of survival and rebuilding from the rubble.
“This ceasefire is cause for celebration, even as we know that it was needed many months ago, and that far too many have been killed, maimed, and rendered homeless or bereft of their family. We cannot forget that many Palestinian healthcare workers, including Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya and six other MedGlobal colleagues, remain unjustly detained and imprisoned by Israel. These medical personnel must be immediately released, and the safety and neutrality of healthcare providers and facilities must be guaranteed – as required by international humanitarian law.”
“To promote true peace, prevent further suffering and to help the people of Gaza recover from their terrible ordeal, all phases of this ceasefire must be fully carried out to bring a definitive and lasting end to the war. The United States and the entire international community must commit to a massive program of aid and rebuilding in Gaza.”
“The horrors that we have witnessed and the losses that we have suffered will never be forgotten, and will leave deep physical and psychological scars,” said Rajaa Musleh, MedGlobal’s Gaza Country Director. “Only by fully rebuilding Gaza’s shattered healthcare system, providing a surge of aid, and allowing humanitarians to do our work unimpeded can we ensure that many more lives are not needlessly lost to malnutrition, disease, and neglect.”
MedGlobal stands ready to redouble its already substantial medical activities and do everything in its power to assist the immediate needs of the civilian population in Gaza, and to support the arduous road to recovery. The organization calls on the Israeli government, global leaders, humanitarian organizations, and the public to uphold essential protections for medical personnel operating in Gaza, affirming the fundamental principle of international humanitarian law that civilians and healthcare workers must be protected.
